Had a run out of Ballylumford Today 3-9-2011
Tommy and I had a run out of Ballylumford today with an old Friend that we had not fished with in years Paul,
We picked the Boat up from the Shed and headed out towards Islandmagee and Picked Paul up on the way, and we arrived at Ballylumford about 09.30hrs and were launched for about 10.oohrs.
We headed straight out to the spiral and had some great sport with the Mackerel, some of them if not most of them were well over the 1lb mark with some I would say getting to the 1.5lb mark, Paul had a nice trio of collies well into the 2lb mark. We filled half a box of Mackerel for the freezer for over winter and for the table, and we used some for bait for the day.
We put out a big rod for anything big that may be around as we always said we would do this some day, so the rod was set up for shark or tope and ballooned of the boat in around 40mtrs of water, I dropped another rod over with a full mackerel bait as did Tommy and we drifted for a while with not even a look at the big baits so we decided to move and then my rod on the bottom took of and I was into a fish (I cant say what it was but it was a substantial fish with head shaking and that, had it on for about 5 mins and then the line went slack, I thought it had broke me but on the retrieval of my line it showed that a 80lb snap swivel had straightened) this now tells me I will never use this type of swivel again as I have lost a few good fish this year, (you would think I would learn) well I have as I don’t care what they cost me it will only be the good ones from here on in.
Anyway enough of the moaning, we had a few more drifts with no joy on the big gear, the rod with the balloon was out all day and not a sniff, we decided to head to hunters were we got the usual suspects of doggies and the odd Bull Huss, Tommy had a good cod and a good Bull Huss, we took a drift over the wreck between the Hunters markers and that produced a few more mackerel and Pollock.
So all in all a good day out the weather was kind and the fishing was good.
